![]() | Kaiju Big Battle - Shocking Truth - DVD |
There have been plenty of times that I have thought there are no new ideas. Music just turns over on itself every few years, with the current trend being to unabashedly rehash the past. And for all the crap that music gets for copying itself, Hollywood is ten times worse. We've been forced to sit through how many remakes over the past five years? Too many, and it's not getting any better. We've had to go to Japan (and the rest of Asia at large) to get anything new and interesting film wise. So where are the new ideas? Who's coming up with new ways to entertain the people? While I could speak ill of most formats for hours, the Kaiju group in Boston have renewed my faith in the creative mind.
Ok, so the basic premise of Kaiju is heavily barrowing from WWE, but their twist on it not only entertained me but also brought a big smile to my face. Take the wrestling you loved from a kid and mix it with giant monsters from Japanese horror films. The idea is so simple, yet so brilliant.
Shocking Truth marks the second DVD from this growing cult favorite, and the first in two years. Fantastically designed suits are donned by guys who are willing to leave it all within the squared circle. It's hilarious. There is something about seeing someone dressed like a giant potato (wrapped in tin-foil mind you) break dancing one minute and performing impressive acrobatics the next. You won't be able to hold back a smile when you see Dr. Cube (a normal man expect for the enormous cube he has for a head) order his minions to attack. Even when the initial visual joke wears off, you'll be impressed by the athleticism these guys possess.
The DVD plays out in storyline fashion. You are kind of brought up to speed on the inner workings of the Kaiju battle, the reasons why this guy hates that guy, but you are also give little glimpses into the live show this group puts on. Actually, if there is one thing that I was disappointed with it was the lack of full matches on the DVD. You have to go to the bonus material to get a full match, and then you only get three… but the entertainment factor is high.
Just go to the Kaiju website. You'll know within two minutes if this is for you or not, but I'm guessing if you read this site, it will be for you. Actually, I pointed a friend to their site when the DVD first came and he promptly dropped $80 in their shop. Basically, you've been warned.
